2011 Branch AGM

This year’s local AGM met at lunchtime on the 11th May at Cherie Booth Lecture theatre – Byrom St campus. Usual branch business including the secretary’s report and officer election was first up, followed by a series of guest speakers and member presentation.

You can find the results of the officer election on our Branch People pages. Please note that if you’re interested in standing as a rep, you needn’t wait for the next AGM. Please put your name forward straight away if you’re interested!

Guest speakers
Martyn Moss (UCU Regional Officer) and Roger Brookers (UCU NEC, Liverpool Uni) kindly visited us to talk about the UCU’s position and the current status of the Pension / TPS dispute, which is gaining pace as the large “compulsory education” teaching unions begin to ballot their members for industrial action.

Local issues
Our branch reps then gave a series of talks on the following issues:
-The current Workload Allocation Model, including its shortfalls. The branch were made aware of how schools are using it as a way to alter (i.e. increase) the workloads imposed on staff without renegotiating terms with our branch, as an LJMU-recognised TU. A report is being compiled on the application of the WAM, vs. the hours required for tasks as reported by staff themselves. Early indications suggest that time allocated for administrative tasks, such as responding to email, are woefully underspecified.
-The obligation on employers to assess and address Health and Safety risks. The branch were made aware of a worrying culture that it is being overlooked, or viewed as a box-ticking exercise in schools – risk assessments being conducted without the involvement of staff being risk-assessed!
-The impact of the closure of the IM Marsh campus on the staff employed there, alongside the fear of the wider impact of the TDA cuts.

Our new banner
Additionally, the branch were presented with our new banner:

(The banner reads:
